The story

Not marketing. The real one.

Built on a fire lookout foundation

The original 1948 lookout burned in 1971 and left a concrete pad on the ridge. The Nagel family bought the parcel in 2016 and spent five years convincing the county that a lodge could sit there without a road cut through old growth. The service road follows the original mule track.

Heat from the ground, light from the sky

Two geothermal wells heat every room, both pools, and the sauna. There are no televisions in the suites — instead each has a skylight over the bed and a printed star chart on the desk that changes monthly.

Fire season is not a marketing season

During wildfire season the lodge holds twelve rooms empty for crews and gives them away free, every year, without a press release. In 2024 that came to 411 room-nights.

Local history

The lake was a log pond

Coeur Ridge floated timber to the mills until 1962. The pilings you can see from the boathouse are what's left of the sorting boom.

The road that almost happened

A 1988 plan would have cut a four-lane through the drainage below. It failed by one county vote. The trail you hike from the lodge is the surveyed centerline.

"Because it's a lie told in small print. Put the number on the room and let people decide."

Why no TVs?

"We tried it in four rooms as an experiment. Those four booked out first for a year. Then we pulled the rest."

Hardest thing to get right?

"Housekeeping pay. We publish the bands now. It cost us margin and fixed our turnover."

Favorite room?

"Suite 6. The skylight lines up with the Milky Way in August."
